Hey guys,

Just wanted to stop by here and say that this site is now NotAnotherTechGeek.com. Over the years, things have changed at XM, and I haven’t been a subscriber of the service for at least a year at this point.

At some point in the near future, I will move this entire blog to old.notanothertechgeek.com, so that it is kept for historical purposes. Why not merge the posts you ask? Because I have been blogging from this site for 7 years now, and my life is so different now from then, that it just makes more sense to take the chance for a “fresh start”. So, join me at my new home, and eventually this website will forward to the new one automatically, until I let the domain name lapse next year.

So, here I sit, Day 8 of the State of Minnesota government shutdown, and it absolutely makes me sick. Now, before you guys start attacking me as a left wing nutjob, hear me out. I’m NOT saying that Liberals are 100% right, not at all. I consider myself, overall, a middle of the road conservative.

With that said, I have been hearing a lot and reading a lot of republican and democrat comments on this whole issue and it makes me absolutely sick. For those of you who don’t know, the state of MN has basically shut down over a budget debate of 1.2 billion dollars. That’s the difference between the GOP’s budget proposal of 34 billion and Mark Dayton’s proposed budget of 35.2 (down over half from where he really wanted to be). Before we go further, the state budget office actually said that in order to continue to operate at current levels we needed to have a budget of 39 billion dollars. So, both proposals have cuts in them. I get that, I want cuts too. The economy is hurting, and everyone is having to cut back (well, unless you were a millionaire to begin with, your doing fine). Now, its not the actual budget amounts that have me sick to my stomach, its hearing these “so-called” christians sit there and say “we don’t need government, shut it down, these people are needy assholes and should GET A JOB!”. First off, let me educate you on something. Many of the people on welfare would LOVE to work. Not all, but in MN it IS a requirement to work or to attempt to work, or to go to school, to be on welfare. Secondly, the reason we have a shrinking bottom line is because people are making LESS now than ever before. Those good rich millionaires, who said that cutting taxes would CREATE jobs in the past 20 years, have actually used those tax breaks to OUTSOURCE jobs to other countries to save a buck, and improve the bottom line. The average American now makes EXACTLY what they did 20 years ago, while the executives now make 20-30% more. So, forgive me when I think to myself “millionaires should pay more taxes”. If you want to outsource jobs so that people can no longer afford to live on simple wages and need to depend on the government for healthcare, daycare, etc, then YOU SHOULD PAY MORE. Especially since you beg and plead for corporate tax breaks, and usually get them.

Putting that aside, I know there is government waste, I see it EVERY DAY. That needs to be cleaned up, and even that isn’t where I take my issue. My issue is people who want to cut everything to the bone, not take care of infrastructure, not pay for roads, school, public transportation, or any number of public services because “they don’t use it”. Well, I don’t use the fire department, we should probably stop funding that huh? Or maybe, just maybe, some services are there for people who want to use them, and do serve towards a more common good. Police keep criminals off our streets, fire departments make sure the damn buildings don’t burn to the ground, roads are built so we can get places, etc. Public transportation exists as a benefit to ease our road system, so that those of us who drive can do so better. Don’t believe me? Keep our government shut down for 2-3 months until the buses stop.

Welfare programs SHOULD exist. Yes, I have been dealt some pretty nice cards. I go to work every day, I make a decent living, and I depend on nobody but myself financially. I have about 6 months of expenses saved up in my bank account, should something happen to me. But, lets say something bad happens, like I get sick and can’t work for a while. I want to work, but I don’t have the energy due to my sickness. Not only has my health insurance been cancelled, but now I don’t know what I’m going to do to cover my bills. Private industry won’t help me, because it doesn’t help their investors. After all, private enterprise isn’t a charity, and I get that. So what do I do, die? Sounds like someone is choosing my fate for me, huh?

And then there are those that bust their asses every day, working harder than most republicans at the top ever will. (Hell, probably making another republican rich, by making them money). But, they don’t make enough money to afford childcare. So, they get some help from the state. Should those people stop working all together, and go on welfare, or should they get childcare assistance, so they can continue to contribute to our economy?

So, two weeks ago, I told you that I failed to keep my resolution last year to lose weight.  I am happy to report that I’m not only keeping it this year, but I am enjoying great success.

I have gone back to counting my calories, and have used the Wii for some form of exercise for AT LEAST 5 times a week every week this year.  And the best part?  I’m feeling, and seeing, my results.  As of right now, I have lost a total of 12 pounds since January 1st, and now that I have added diet into my daily routine with Exercise, I should start to see that number increase.  What a difference 4% weight loss makes too.  I’m already feeling less “bogged down”, and I seem to be getting better sleep.

I’ll stop by again with more updates when I have them!

So, another year has quickly passed by, and I failed to complete on my resolutions of 2010.

We are actually a month into 2011, and I am happy to say that so far, I have kept my resolution. I have resolved to lose 20 pounds per quarter through the year. So far, in a month, I have lost 9 pounds. Go me!

I am doing this via a series of Wii fitness games, dieting, and other lifestyle changes. I’ll keep you posted.

Well hello there.  Yes, it’s again been a while since my last post.  I’ve been playing with WordPress for another project I am doing (turning wordpress into more of a CMS rather than a blog, fun!) and it got me thinking that I hadn’t updated this thing in a while.

The move to my new place is complete, and I absolutely love it.  A few minutes from work means that I get at least an extra hour every day vs my last situation, which I am using to get out and be more active (albiet slightly, but its better than nothing!).

I’ve been spending a lot of time working on the whole radio thing in my time off, and that is going along pretty well (although we still haven’t figured out how to make it profitable yet).

I’ll try to get in here to update this thing more often, but I’ve said that in the past to no avail, so I better not even make the promise.

Slightly less than two years after moving in to my first apartment, I find myself packing it all up and moving yet again.  I’m happy to be moving closer to work and upgrading apartments, but at the same time, I’d be lying if I didn’t also say that I’m a tad bit sad as well, for a few reasons.

Part of this era, as I look back, ended 7 months ago.  You see, a big part of the reason (although not the only reason) I chose to live here was that I had two of my best friends living just 4 doors down the hall.  That was, of course, until they bought a house last December.  While it’s not that far away (10 minutes now, 20 minutes when I move) it does seem to have changed things a bit.  Probably not entirely because of moving, but they have been busy planning a wedding, getting in shape, and developing new friendships.  Still, this building will always have many memories as me just strolling down the hall to have a few drinks while playing WoW, or having Rose stop down when I’m sick with a care package to help me feel better.  It was probably the best part of the last two years of my life.  (And if the subjects of this post are reading it now, I propose a movie night very soon, its been far too long!).  While I’ll be a tad bit further away than I used to be, I want to make more of an effort to hang out with you guys when I move.  And as a bonus, I’ll be less than a mile from Boston Market again!  But, I’m more than happy to drive down to see you guys too!

Another part of what I’ll miss about living here is the view, the concrete walls, and the location.  Burnsville was always a city that I grew up with, being where us Prior Lakers went to shop, and worship (my old church used to be two blocks from here before they also moved to Savage).  It was something I was familular with, so it didn’t take that much time to get acclimated when I moved here full time.  It’s another stage to growing up I guess, but I am looking forward to it!

But, as I look back at the things that were great about living here, I also look forward to all the things that are great about living up there.  The shorter communtes, my own washer, being literally 2 miles from EVERYTHING, and having the change of scenery will be nice.  The great thing about renting is, if I get up there and I’m miserable, I can always move back down here in a year.
